DOSELVA

Vanilla: The High Value Orchid that Grows on Trees.

Doselva has imported some of the highest quality adult plant material of vanilla planifolia species from farmers in the birthplace of vanilla – Papantla, Veracruz, Mexico. First planted in partner farm Gaia Estate in 2015 and then in 2017 at the Doselva and partner farms in Matagalpa, Carazo and Boaco, we currently have the largest stock of vanilla planifolia vines in Nicaragua. Our company target is to establish at least 300,000 planted vines by 2027, yielding as much as 26 MT of cured vanilla annually with this level of production capacity in country. Production levels can increase depending on farmer interest and available plant material.

Vanilla:

The High Value Orchid that Grows on Trees.

Nicaragua hosts some of the most vibrant agroforestry systems in all of Central America, in large part due to coffee production. However, the coffee crop has been hit hard by the impacts of climate change and price volatility, and farmers are looking for alternatives. Vanilla, produced and processed through the Doselva value chain, is an excellent alternative. The vanilla orchid is shade tolerant and uses a support tree to climb during production. Farmers can use their existing agroforestry systems, and reforest their farms to plant vanilla.

Doselva teaches farmers to mulch, organically treat disease and pests, manually pollenate flowers, and correctly harvest vanilla at its perfect stage of ripeness.
